What Can Parents Do?

To be honest we don’t yet have the answers, but if parents approach you with concerns about their children’s gambling we suggest the following ideas:

Parents need to be good role models. Encourage them to consider their own gambling habits and behaviors. Parents should understand the influence they have on their children and demonstrate the ability to gamble responsibly.

Don’t engage children in gambling. Making bets around the house, buying lottery tickets as presents, or giving money to engage in gambling activities is not a good idea.

Parents should talk with their young teens, particularly boys, in order to help them understand how to be in control of their world.

Teach youth about the negative consequences of gambling. Help them understand how gambling works.

Encourage parents to maintain an environment that encourages open communication and discussion between parents and children about gambling.

There are no “tell-tale” signs that will clearly indicate if child is gambling or may have a problem with gambling. Paying close attention to children’s activities may aid in recognizing difficulties.

Remind kids that it is illegal for them to gamble until they are 21 years old. This includes gambling online and playing the lottery.

Be involved in community efforts to help discourage youth gambling and promote education about gambling.
